Understanding Guardamar's Water Supply

Guardamar del Segura sits at the northern edge of our service area, a distinctly Spanish town that has increasingly attracted British, Irish, and Nordic expats drawn by its stunning pine-backed beaches, the famous sand dunes, and a more authentic Spanish lifestyle than some of the heavily expat-dominated urbanisations further south.

The water supply in Guardamar differs somewhat from Torrevieja and the southern Orihuela Costa. Guardamar is served by the municipal water supply that draws from a combination of the Segura river basin and desalinated water from the Torrevieja plant, managed through the local water authority. The blend means water hardness can vary more than in neighbouring towns — typically ranging between 35 and 48 °fH (French degrees), which still places it firmly in the “hard” to “very hard” category.

Residents in the older town centre near the castle and the pine forest often notice slightly different water characteristics compared to those living in the newer developments towards La Marina and the southern fringes. Properties near the dunes and closer to the river mouth may experience higher sediment levels, particularly after heavy rains when the Segura carries more particulate matter. If you live in a property fed by a private water storage tank (“depósito”), which is common in many Guardamar urbanisations, water quality can be further affected by tank condition and maintenance.

What remains consistent across Guardamar is the high mineral content. The town's proximity to the Segura river and the natural park of the dunes also influences water composition. After periods of heavy rain, particularly in autumn, water turbidity can increase as the river swells.
